DIY Japanese Masking Tape Dispenser!

I have a tape addiction. It’s true. It’s a bit out of control. I love tape in all colors, and I especially love patterned tapes. I’ve amassed a great collection over the years, but when the Japanese masking / washi tapes became popular a couple years ago, it was all over. That’s when it really got out of control!

I had wanted to get some sort of tape organizer or dispenser, but it just seemed silly to spend money on something that was only going to fuel my addiction.

So, why not make one?

I used the following materials:

Empty Press ‘n Seal Box

Decorative paper

Clear craft plastic from the art store

Double tack

x-acto knife

ruler

Step 1: Take Press ‘n Seal box apart.

Don’t forget to remove the plastic cutting strip as well.

Step 2: Trim box flap.

The box is designed with an overhang, so I trimmed the extra cardboard. That way, the tapes wouldn’t get stuck to the front of the box.

Step 3: Cover box with decorative paper and replace plastic cutting strip.

I really hate glue, so I used double tack to adhere the paper to the box. I also used a thin piece of tape to reattach the plastic cutting strip.

Step 4: Cut out viewing window, cut craft plastic to size, and attach.

I wanted to be able to see all the colors, so I cut a window and attached craft plastic. You can definitely skip this part if you don’t feel that you need it.

Step 5: Align your tapes on the tube, and put the box back together.

The original pieces of the Press ‘n Seal box should pop back together easily.

There you have it! It’s such a quick and easy way to keep everything organized!
